In 1969 I put out a cook book “Field Tested SPORTSMAN RECIPES Testing Kitchen” One of the favorite recipes was this one. This was well before you could buy the ones in stores now. You can make better ones than you can buy, and save money. Great on trips.

SURVIVAL GRUB

  • 3 cups Oatmeal (barley flakes or wheat flakes)
  • 21/2 cups powdered milk
  • 1 cup white sugar (may use brown sugar)
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. water
  • ½ pkg. citrus flavored gelatin (3 oz. size)

Put the honey and water into a small pan and bring to a boil. While this is heating, combine the dry ingredients except the gelatin in a mixing bowl. Dissolve the gelatin in the heated water and honey, and then add it to the dry ingredients. After mixing well, add water a teaspoon at a time until the mixture is barley moist enough to be molded. Pack into a baking dish or other mold or in aluminum foil, place in an oven and dry under very low heat lowest seating on oven. Wrap in aluminum foil store and till needed.

Add dried fruit to mixture before mixing if you like – raisins, apricots, dates, or many other dried fruits. Nuts like peanuts, walnuts, pecans, can be used in the mixture. A ½ cup of chunky peanut butter adds a different flavor if you like peanut butter.
